Daily Relapse Prevention Workshops:

The Relapse Prevention Workshops are structured, interactive and facilitated groups that deliver the basic information necessary for craving management. Our primary goal is to prevent a return to alcohol and drug use:  This is done by helping our clients recognize and manage the high risk situations and patterns of self-defeating thinking and behavior that sets them up to start using alcohol or drugs again. We help develop a relapse prevention plan....

Most relapse prevention plans involve addressing the following areas:

Adjusting environment of the one in recovery – This many entail changing residence, job, neighborhood, circle of friends and acquaintances, or addressing any environmental factor that may lead to a relapse.

Use the new life skills acquired in therapy – These were presented as a means for addressing and replacing the old behaviors that contributed to addiction.

Identify the shortcomings of the current relapse prevention plan –If an old method did not work, find another one.

Develop a network of support communities – Recovery is difficult alone. Accessing individuals and processes who understand the problems of trying to live a sober will help prevent a relapse.

Life Skills and Coaching Classes:

One of the examples, of many, taught in our life skills class is assessing some common high-risk situations, described by the acronym, HALT: >

How do you feel at the end of the day? You're probably hungry because you haven't eaten well. You're probably angry because you've had a tough day at work or a tough commute home. You may feel lonely because you're isolated. You don't have to be physically alone to feel lonely. And you're tired. That's why your strongest cravings usually occur at the end of the day. Here's another way of looking at high-risk situations:

PEOPLE: People who you use drugs with or who are related to your drug use. People who you have conflicts with, and who make you want to use or drink. People who you celebrate with by using or drinking. People who encourage you to use, either directly or indirectly.

PLACES: Places where you use drugs or drink, or where you get your drugs or alcohol.

THINGS: Things that remind you of your using or drinking.

Equine Therapy:

At Scottsdale Recovery Center we believe rebuilding a meaningful life with an amplified sense of well-being is the goal of overcoming any addiction.

Equine-assisted therapy helps those in recovery by centering and strengthening their innermost core of self while keeping them strongly tethered to their highest strivings.  This broad range of connection is fostered most distinctly by the horse, a very grounded yet spiritual being.  The horse’s intuitive sense recognizes self-defeating  patterns and mirrors these energies back to the client, which are interpreted by a skilled equine specialist and psychologist.  The lack of filter between horse and client increases personal awareness and promotes accountability and trust.

Furthering the results and gains from the open pasture to real life is a necessary aspect of equine-assisted therapy.  Treatment facilities have long recognized the importance of transitioning from the safety of a recovery setting to the real world. Equine-assisted therapy supports this transition by introducing uncontrolled variables and teaching effective self-control measures which regulate affect and increase mindfulness.  Better decisions and less impulse dyscontrol are direct results of these equine encounters.

Relationships are strengthened and their higher qualities emerge which herald deeply meaningful, sustainable soul

Recovery Based Yoga:

Scottsdale Recovery Center is a huge fan of Yoga. Not only can it bring balance to a troubled mind, but it helps increase self-awareness; enhance physical and mental stamina; purify and detoxify the body; improve strength, flexibility and stability; and discover a spiritual energy from within.

Yoga and the 12 Steps Program work hand-in-hand to take you on a journey with the same destination, which is to live a good life and aspire to something greater than one’s self.

As stated in “Yoga for Wellness” by Gary Kraftsow, we are each born with certain genetically predetermined characteristics that influence our health, however we have an opportunity through changing our actions to effect great changes in our degree of wellness. He goes on to explain that this process of change begins with discipline of the body, breath and mind, known in Yoga tradition as asana practice.

It is with this beautiful practice that a means of self-awareness is discovered, which is essential for self-transformation.

Morning Meditation and Nightly Checkout Meetings:

These activities take place in the homes, upon awakening and before bedtime. They are mandatory house meetings and all information shared stays within the confide of the group. They are created to help maintain an increased spiritual awareness throughout their day, as well as to make sure the clients make any amends they need to make, offer forgiveness, share their day and receive any constructive criticism and guidance from the group.
